Muscles. Flashcards
What is the agonist muscle?
AGONY
Prime mover, it contracts (shortens) to create movement. Works with the antagonist and synergist muscles.
What Is a Synergist Muscle?
A muscle that works with the antagonistic and agonist muscle to help stabilise a bone and accomplish a movement.
What is the antagonist muscle?
Muscle that relaxes (extends) to create movement. Works with the agonist (prime over).
What is the origin?
Tendon at the non moving or fixed part of the muscle. Located at the top of the muscle.
What is the insertion?
Tendon at the moving end if the muscle. Located at the bottom of the muscle.
What are involuntary muscles?
Muscles that we do not control for movement. Such as out internal organs, they work without us telling them to.
What are voluntary muscles?
Muscles that we control for movement. They work when we tell them to such as the bicep.
What is isometric?
A muscle contraction that doesn’t create movement.
What is isotonic?
A muscle contraction that creates movement.
It can be concentric - when muscles shorten as fibres contact to create movement.
Or eccentric - when the fibres contract and muscles lengthen to create movement.
What is hypertrophy?
When muscle fibres become bigger and stronger due to regular training/work.
