Muscles Flashcards
Agonist (Also prime mover)
A muscle that carries out an action and is opposed by another muscle- the antagonist
Antagonist (opponent)
A muscle that performs the opposite action of the prime mover and synergistic muscles; opponent
Synergist
A muscle that supports the prime mover (to create a movement)
Muscle balance
The state of equilibrium that exists when there is a balance of strength of opposing muscles acting on a joint, providing ideal alignment for movement and optimal stabilization
Muscle imbalance
Inequality in strength of opposing muscles, existing when a muscle is weak and its antagonist is strong- leading to faulty alignment and inefficient movement
Calcaneal tendon
Achilies tendon - tendon connecting the back of the ankle and lower leg to the foot
Illiopsoas
Hip flexor muscles
Ligaments
Are tough bands of fiber designed to help keep the ranges of motion within limits for the protection of the joints and its structures
Concentric contraction of the muscles
A type of contraction in which the muscle visibly shortens
Eccentric muscle contraction
When the muscle visibly elongates
Isometric contraction of the muscles
A static contraction: Where a muscle develops tension, but not enough to move the body part against another resistance
Primary hip flexors
Illiachas and soaz muscles
Gastrocnemius
Calf muscle
Soleus muscle
Lower leg muscles
