muscles Flashcards
What is the origin?
The origin is the attachment to the skeleton that is more stationary and is closer to the center
What is the insertion?
The insertion is the attachment to to the skeleton on the farther and more moveable part of the body
What happens when you flex a muscle?
It contracts, and pulls the insertion closer to the origin
What is an antagonist
Each muscle has an opposite that is stretched out when the first muscle contracts. (Ex, bicep flexes and tricep extends)
What is an “active” muscle as opposed to relaxed?
The active muscle is the muscle being contracted, or flexed. The relaxed muscle is it’s antagonists.
What are the two parts of the muscle?
the belly and the tendons
when do muscle fibers bunch up
When the muscle is active
describe the belly of the muscle
The belly is made up of muscle fibers and the fibers follow the axis of the muscle, but there are exeptions
What is the relationship between skinfolds and muscle fibers
Skinfolds run perpendicular to the muscle fibers
When you flex or stretch what shortens, and what stays the same?
The belly shortens and the tendons stay the same
describe the shape of the tendon
The tendon does not stretch itself and the shape ,length and thickness varies from tendon to tendon.
What do tendons look like when muscles are bulging out
Tendons look like recessed planes
What is the difference between a tendon, a ligament and a fascia
a Tendon attaches a muscle to a bone, a ligament attaches a bone to a bone and a fascia attaches a muscle to a muscle
What are Tendinous Intersections
A Tendinous intersection is the part where tendons go inside the muscle belly, like in the abs
How long is the tendon vs the belly
The length of the tendon vs the belly varies from person to person
