Abs Flashcards
What is the rectus abdominis
1 of the 4 muscle layers of the abdominal wall. It’s a long flat rectangular muscle that sits on your torso
Where does the rectus abdominis originate?
The rectus abdominus originates at the pubic crest
Where does the rectus abdominis insert?
The costal cartilage of the 5th, 6th and 7th ribs and the xiphoide process
What is the function of the rectus abdominis?
The rectus abdominis is the part of the abdominal wall that pulls the torso forward.
When the abs compress the insertion moves closer to the origin. (like crunches),
but if the ribcage is fixed, the pelvis will move closer.
O they can be brought together when neither is fixed
What tendon is on the side of the rectum abdominis
linea semilunaris
what tendon is in the middle of the rectus abdominis
The linea alba or “The center line”
What tendon is horizontal and cuts the rectus abdominis into 6 parts
the tendinous intersection. they appear as shallow grooves.
describe why abs are more prominent on muscular people.
As the muscle grows during exercise, the tendons stays the same the the groove grows deeper
What part of the linea alba bends sideways and why
The linea alba only bends latterally above the naval, because it matches the curves of the lumbar vertebrae. remember the bottom 2 vertebrea are ocked and only the top 3 move
Why can’t the linea alba be seen on most people.
fat covers the linea alba on most people
What does the linea semilunaris divide between?
The linea semilunaris defines the border between the rectus abdominis and the external obliques
How long is the rectus abdominis horizontally?
The rectus abdominis is a bit shorter the distance between the nipples
Describe the shape of the first section of tendinous intersection
The first section of the tendinous intersection is diagonal and falls in front of the thoracic arch
describe the shape of the 2nd and 3rd sections of the tendinous intersection
Both the second and 3rd sections are horizontal and the 3rd aligns with the naval. the 3 sections create the 6 pack
describe the portion below the 6 pack
The “40 oz” is below the belly button, and you can only see the top portion of the center line
