Muscle Tissue Flashcards
Muscle Tissue
Characteristics -cellularity (more cells than matrix) -cells contain myosin and actin -high vascularity (carries 02, C6H12O6, H2O, and removes waste) -tremendous relationship with nervous system
Are muscle cells lifelong?
Yes, except smooth muscle of the uterus during pregnacy
What is muscle tissue replaced with when it dies?
Dense CT (scar tissue) which is strong but not contractile
Skeletal Muscle
Characteristics -striated -can only contract and get shorter -pull as a team -voluntary -long, lots of nuclei, lots of mitochondria -increase in size with use
Cardiac Muscle
Characteristics -striated -only one nuclei -cells are short and branched -self-contracting -use free fatty acids (FFA) as fuel
Smooth Muscle
Characteristics -not striated -tapered at ends -involuntary (sensitive to nerve stimulation and hormones) -very strong and can hold a contraction longer than skeletal muscle -can come out of Go in special circumstances Location -walls of hollow organs -medium and larger blood vessels -bronchiole tubes
Myosin
one type of contractile protein
Actin
one type of contractile protein
Grip Junction
-form intercalcated discs -contract as unit -found in cardiac muscle
A Bands
the darker lines in muscle tissue
I Bands
the lighter lines in between A bands in muscle tissue
