Heart Anatomy Flashcards
Epicardium
-Visceral (close to heart) layer of pericardial sac
What is the function of the epicardium?
Reduces Friction
What kind of tissue is the epicardium composed of?
Simple Squamous -good for diffuse and keeps the surface slick
Myocardium
Cardiac Muscle (myo=muscle)
Endocardium
-Inside the heart chambers
What kind of tissue is the endocardium composed of?
Simple Squamous (because it needs to be slick)
Where is endothelium found?
Lining the blood vessels of the coming in and out of the heart
What are the three layers of the heart?
Epicardium, Myocardium, and Endocardium
Superior Vena Cava Function
Brings blood from the upper body to the right atrium
What does superior vena cava mean?
“Great Vein”
Inferior Vena Cava Function
Brings blood from the lower body to the heart
Right Atrium Function
Receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cavas
Tricuspid Valve
-One way valve that allows blood to flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle -Has 3 tendons called cordae tendonae anchored to the papillary muscles
What are the tendons of the heart called?
Cordae Tendonae
Right Ventricle
-Pumps blood through the pulmonary semi-lunar valves and into pulmonary trunk which separates into the two pulmonary arteries
Pulmonary Semi-Lunar Valve
pulmonary= lungs semi-lunar= half moon leaflets named after the pulmonary artery
