Muscle testing Flashcards
McMurray Test
-torn meniscus of the knee
goniometer AKA arthrometer
instrument for measuring angles of joint movement and ROM
anterior drawer test
Ant. and post. cruciate ligament integrity
Apley test
Torn meniscus in knee
Ballotement
effusion or excess fluid in knee
Bragard Stretch Test
L4, L5, S1 nerve root irritation: test for lumbar disk herniation
Bulge sign
excess fluid in knee
Femoral stretch test
L1-L4 nerve root irritation
Katz hand diagram
median nerve integrity- carpal tunnel syndrome
Lachman test
Ant. cruciate ligament integrity
McMurray test
Torn meniscus in knee: if the click is palpable or audible, the test is positive (torn medial meniscus)
Phalen Test
median nerve integrity- carpal tunnel syndrome
Straight leg raising
L4, L5, S1 nerve root irritation : Lasegue sign positive when the patient cannot raise more than 30 degrees w/out pain
Thomas Test
Flexion contracture of hip: may be masked b y excessive lumbar lordosis, w/ one leg bent and one leg straight. if straight leg cannot stay on the table= hip flexion contracture
Thumb abduction test
Median nerve integrity- ex. for De Quervain’s dz
Tinel sign
Median nerve integrity: positive means carpal tunnel syndrome, done by striking pt’s wrist w/ index or middle finger where median nerve passes
Trendelenburg sign
weak hip ABductor muscles- disorder btwn pelvis and femur. person stand on “good” leg and pelvis on opp. side elevates. on “bad” leg pelvis on opp. side falls= + Trendelenburg
varus/valgus stress test
mediolateral instability in knee
tennis elbow
lateral epicondylitis
golfer’s elbow, pitcher’s
medial epicondylitis
Pelvic rock test
sacroiliac joint instability
Pain test in SI joint
w/ leg off the table
Adduction stress test
LCL tear test- pain or gap in lateral joint line points to a possible tear
Apley scratch test
External rotation and abduction:
