Muscle Pathology Flashcards
What are the changes that occur for each grade of muscle strain
Grade 1 - only affects limited number of fibres, no decrease in strength, full range of motion, pain and tenderness delayed to the next day
Grade 2 - nearly half fibres are torn, acute and significant pain accompanied by swelling and minor decrease in muscle strength
Grade 3 - complete rupture of muscle, tendon separates from muscle belly or muscle belly torn in two parts, severe swelling and pain and complete loss of function
What is Tendinopathy, what causes it and what changes occur
Repetitive strain of a tendon can produce micro and macro trauma which starts to alter the collagen structure causing inflammation, oedema and pain. Tissue damage is greater than the natural repair process can cause partial or complete rupture of tendon
What is sarcopenia
Progressive and generalised skeletal muscle disorder that involves accelerated loss of muscle mass and function
Risk factors include lifestyle lacking exercise, hormone and cytokine imbalance, evolutionary basis
