Muscle Energy Techniques Flashcards
What technique is used for METs
In which a patient’s muscles are actively used on request, from a precisely controlled position, in a specific direction, and against a distinctly executed counterforce
What are the benefits of METs
Restore normal joint ROM
Strengthening weak muscles
Increasing joint mobility
Boosting local circulation
Improving musculoskeletal function
What are the two main applications of MET
Post isometric relaxation
Reciprocal inhibition
Both techniques involve the stretch reflex
Muscle spindles- sensitive to change in length and speed
Golgi tendon organs- detect prolonged change in tension
MET Method of application
Patients limb is taken to a point where resistance is felt. The patient is then asked to isometrically contract the muscle to be treated (PIR) or the antagonist (RI) using approx 20% of the muscle strength capability
