Muscle Contractions Flashcards
Produces force while lengthening and shortening
Isotonic contracting
Concentric phase
Force generated by contraction can overcome the resistance. The muscle shortens as it does this
Eccentric phase
Muscle lengthens as it gains tension and is over come by the load.
It is contracted as it tries to resist
Isometric
Muscle contracts to resist force or weight without changing the length of the muscle. Example. Wall sit. Plank.
Slow twitch fibres
Isokinetic
Muscle shortens as it gains tension.
Requires constant speed over ROM.
Prime mover
Muscle that is strong enough to set up and start a movement
Assistant mover
Once the movement starts this muscle comes in to assist the movement
Agonist
Responsible for causing movement
Antagonist
Provide a controlling effect. Oppose the movement by relaxing
Synergistic
Provides stability and control of a joint while other muscles are performing the main movement.
