Heart and blood Flashcards
Diastole
When the heart is at rest
When the heart contracts to pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygenated blood to the body
Systole
Stage 1
Deoxygenated blood enters the heart through the Vena Cava (superior and inferior)
Stage 2
Blood passes into right atrium and right ventricle
Stage 3
Right ventricle pushes the blood through pulmonary arteries and back into body
Stage 4
Passes through lungs to drop off carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen
Stage 5
Oxygenated blood returns to heart via pulmonary veins.
Stage 6
Blood enters left atrium and left ventricle
Stage 7
Left ventricle pushes blood out into body via the aorta
Stage 8
Blood travels to parts of the body and drops of needed oxygen and picks up carbon dioxide
Systemic circulation
Circulation of blood from left ventricle, to the body, and back to the right atrium
Pulmonary system
Circulation of blood from right ventricle to lungs and back to left atrium
Capillaries
Where nutrients, gas and waste exchange at a muscle.
They have thin permeable walls to make this possible.
Arteries
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
Except pulmonary artery
Veins
Carry deoxygenated blood towards to heart.
Except for the pulmonary vein
Blood clotting agent
Platelets
In plasma
Oxygen bearing
Red blood cells
Disease fighting
White blood cells
Cardiovascular system function
Transport nutrients, oxygen and hormones.
Remove metabolic wastes
