muscle and movement Flashcards
what are the 3 major functions os skeletal muscle?
- movement
-posture
-heat production
what are the 4 main characteristics of skeletal muscle?
- irritability
- contractility
- extensibility
- elasticity
what are the 3 main types of muscle contraction?
1- isometric
2- concentric
3- eccentric
what is an isometric conctraction?
-when a muscle generates force and attempts to shorten, but does not overcome the external resistance
-static
-does not produce external work
what is a concentric muscle contraction?
- concentric action occurs when the muscle shortens and joint movement occurs as tension develops
what is eccentric contraction?
- eccentric action occurs when the external resistance exceeds muscle force and the muscle lengthens while developing tension
- eg controlled lowing
what are examples of different types of muscle structure?
- circular muscle
-convergent muscle
-multipennate muscle
-parallel muscle
-unipennate muscle - bipennate muscle
what is an agonist in terms of muscle movement?
the muscle that generates most of the force to prodyce a movement
what is a synergist?
geerates force to help the agonist
what is an antagonist?
opposes the movement of the agonist
what is the fixator?
the muscle that stabilises the origin of the agonist muscle
