Murder and Psychopathy - Week 14 Flashcards
What do we use to diagnose?
Hare PCL
DSM
What is factor 1 in Hare PCL-R?
Social Deviance
e.g impulsivity and poor behavioural control
What is factor 2 in Hare PCL-R?
Interpersonal/affective
e.g superficial charm, lack of empathy
What is Psychopathy?
Innate
Biologically based
No capacity to feel remorse, guilt or empathy
What is sociopathy?
Might result from environmental factors such as poverty and extreme violence
They lack empathy, guilt and remorse
However may feel attached to some individuals close to them
what are 3 predicting factors?
low resting heart rate - it can be heritable as criminal parents have a low resting heart rate
frontal deficits in the brain
Early health factors such as malnutrition and birth complications
What is the predicting factor by Farrington et al?
Boys with low heart rate are more likely to become violent offenders if they have a bad relationship with their parents in a large family
What is the prefrontal cortex?
Responsible for many higher level functions including social behaviour and self control
what does E.G Raine et al say about prefrontal cortex?
violent offenders have functional deficits of the brain to the anterior regions of the brain particularly the frontal region
What is desensitisation to violence?
A decrease in the psychological and physiological reaction to witnessing and engaging in aggression and violence
what s displaced aggression?
Aggression that is targeted towards something that is not the original source of provocation or negative effect
Against innocent targets
e.g your boss informs you about how dumb he thinks you are which can then PRIME you for aggressive responding e.g over reacting to what are normally just mild annoyances
What is trigger displaced aggression?
disproportionate levels of aggression directed at an individual who provided minor provocation
What are the 3 situations that preclude retaliation settling context for displaced aggression?
1) the provoking situation has an immaterial source (e.g the economy is bad)
2) The source leaves before you can react (e.g someone vandalises ur car and goes)
3) The provocateur has power over you (e.g your boss telling you how dumb you are)
2 reasons why we should expect a greater tendency to displace aggression in this population?
people who engage in non-normative behaviours often will clash with others
Environments that foster maladaptive behaviours often contribute to increased negative emotions overall.
what is rumination?
repetitive thinking or dwelling on negative feelings and distress and their causes and consequences
