respiratory droplets, fomites and direct contact
Who gets this?
kids 5-9
What is the incubation period?
18 days highly infectious
How long can virus be transmitted to others?
2 wks
What is the clinical manifestations?
fever, fatigue, HA, anorexia, parotitis
How does parotitis occur and when?
unilateral, last 7 days then resolves
What is the second most common manifestation?
meningitis - 15%
What are some other abnormal CM?
Encephalitis in which the patient develops seizures, delirium or other neurologic abnormaltities
Epididymo-orchitis
Pancreatitis
Thyroiditis
Increased rates of spontaneous abortion in pregnant women
How do you dx?
clinically, also mumps IgM or PCR
How do you tx?
hydrate and acetaminophen, hospitalize if severe
