Complication

A

1) 10-15% meningitis, pancreatitis
–> orchitis–> necrosis of testis –> infertility
–> unilateral nerve deafness ( hearing loss is complete and permanent)
2) immunity : lifelong immunity ( even sun clinical infections generate)
3) prevention : attenuated live mumps virus vaccine ( monovalent)
MR - with rubella
MMR- measles and rubella

The infection

A

1) acute contagious disease- enlargement of one or both parotid glands ( also pancreatic, tested, ovaries, CNS)
2) IP- 18 days
3) virus - shed in saliva : 6 days before to 1 week after salivary gland swelling 1\3 asymptotic
3) rapids enlargement of salivary glands
4) low grade fever- 1 week
