Where is sodium (Na+) located?
outside the cell; major extracellular cation
Where is potassium (K+) located?
inside the cell; major intracellular cation
K+ practice implications include?
- closely monitor cardiac status
- 5.1 may contradict PT secondary to arrhythmia
- pt with CRF may tolerate levels of 5.5
Na+ practice implications include?
- mental status change with abnormal levels
- monitor for symptoms of weakness, confusion, stupor, hypotension, seizures, edema, and weight gain
If dehydrated, how are electrolytes effected?
electrolytes are too high
If drinking to much H2O, how are electrolytes effected?
electrolytes will be too low
Sarcoidosis is what?
The formation of noncaseating granulomas (inflammatory cells or macrophages surround lymphocytes)
What is Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome?
The final complication of critical illness, organ failure.
What are common causes of fluid and electrolyte disorders?
- burns
- surgery
- diabetes
- malignancy
- alcoholism
- aging
