non-identical twins (fraternal) - two eggs ovulated

What is DCDA pregnancy?
Lambda sign on ultrasound - two placentas forming and two amniotic sacs
What is MCDA pregnancy?
sharing placenta but two amniotic sacs
What are maternal complications of twin pregnancy?
Hyperemesis
Pre-eclampsia
Acute pyelonephritis
Anaemia
Pressure symptoms - dyspnoea, dyspepsia etc
Polyhydramnios
Preterm delivery and PROM
Haemorrhage
What are fetal complications of twin pregnancy?
IUGR - intrauterine growth restriction
Low birth weight
Prematurity
Congenital abnormalities
Increased perinatal mortality rate
Discordant twin growth
What a complication specific to monochorionic twins?
as they are sharing a placenta, twin-twin transfusion syndrome
What is the management of twin-twin transfusion syndrome?
laser ablation of the blood vessels of the placenta which connect the babies
What is the delivery time of DCDA twins?
37 weeks - aim for vaginal delivery if first twin head down
What is the delivery time of MCMA twins?
32 weeks - caesarean section
What is the delivery time of MCDA twins?
36 weeks - aim for vaginal delivery if first twin head down
