When does antenatal care start?
Preconception:
- lifestyle e.g. smoking, alcohol, weight
- optimise medical disorders
- ideal timing pregnancy
What medications should be considered in antenatal care?
Commence folic acid 3 months prior
Avoid teratogenics
Adjust medication, make medication pregnancy plan
When is the first pregnancy appointment for an uncomplicated pregnancy?
By 10 weeks
For nullparous women, how many appointments do they have during pregnancy?

What food hygeine is advised for during pregnancy?
Avoid Raw Seafood
Avoid Unpasteurized Juice or Cider
Unpasteurized Milk is a No-No

Only Consume Cooked Eggs
Avoid Premade Meat or Seafood Salad
Do Not Eat Raw Sprouts
Avoid Undercooked Meat & Poultry
Reheat Hot Dogs & Luncheon Meats
Be Selective with Meat Spreads or Pate
What are screening for during pregnancy?
Pre-existing conditions (diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy, HIV, cardiac, autoimmune)
Risk factors e.g. GDM, pre-eclampsia
Infections
Long term health implications - cardiac, renal
BMI
Domestic violence
Mental health problems
Migrant women
If a pregnant women has a hypertensive disorder, what must be done?
BP every visit
If a pregnant women has anaemia, what must be done?
FBC at booking, 28 weeks, 34 weeks
If a pregnant women has red cell antibodies, what must be done?
Group, antibodies (anti D if needed)
If a pregnant women has gestational diabetes, what must be done?
GTT or COVID tests (random glucose, HbA1c)
What screening is done for the fetus?
Dating scan - recommended at 8-14 weeks
Downs screening - combined test (before 14 weeks OR QUAD test 13 - 20 weeks
Anomaly scan at 18-21 weeks
Growth - SFH measurement from 24-26 weeks until birth
What is put done during the third trimester of pregnancy?
Prepare and plan for labour and birth
Confirm fetal size and presentation
Breast feeding information
Caring for newborn baby
Vitamin K prophylaxis after birth
Neonatal screening tests
Postnatal care/ Mental health
