what is multiple myeloma?
A
a haematological malignancy characterised by plasma cell proliferation

What age does multiple meyloma present?
A
70 years old

Clinical features of Multiple myeloma?
A
- Calcium - hypercalcaemia due to increased osteoclast activity
- Renal - renal damage/nephrocalcinosis
- Anaemia - bone marrow crowding suppresses erythropoeisis
- Bleeding - thrombocytopenia
- Bones - bone pain and lytic lesions
- Infection - reduced production of normal immuniglobulin

Symptom of multiple myeloma
A
- hypercalcaemia - constipation, nausea and confusion
- anaemia - fatigue and pallor
- thrombocytopenia - excess bleeding
- Back pain / bone pain - bone marrow infiltration

A
- FBC
- serum/protein electrophoresis
- bone marrow aspiration and biopsy

What is seen on MRI?
A
lytic bone lesions

What is a characteristic finding on x ray?
A
‘rain drop’ skull- numerous random dark spots seen on x ray due to bone lysis
