Multi-Store Model of Memory (MSM) Flashcards
Who proposed MSM?
Atkinson & Shiffrin 1968
What are the 3 memory types in the MSM?
sensory, short-term, long-term
What are the main features of MSM?
-the process of remembering is a sequence which must go in a certain order and cannot be changed (SM, STM,LTM)
- the stores are unitary
MSM put forward as a representation
What’s good about MSM?
- very influential mode- led to further research
- first theory to suggest separation of STM & LTM
- lots of evidence to support the model
Why is MSM not good?
- reductionist
- too much emphasis on rehearsal- don’t always have to rehearse to remember
- can’t explain the different memory strategies used today to help remember
Sensory memory- encoding, capacity, duration?
Encoding- via all senses
Capacity- limited
Duration- fraction of a second
Short-term memory- encoding, capacity, duration?
Encoding- acoustically
Capacity- 7 +/- 2 chunks
Duration- seconds- minutes depend on rehearsal
Long-term memory- encoding, capacity, duration?
Encoding- semantically
Capacity- unlimited
Duration- infinite (life-time)
EVALUATION-Supporting
Baddeley- his study supports encoding
Clivewearing- supports seperate stores-his STM memory is functioning in the absence of his damaged LTM
EVALUATION-Conflicting
K.C- motorcycle accident show that LTM memory is more complicated than MSM suggests as he couldn’t recall episodic memories from his life but could recall semantic info
reductionist
EVALUATION-Other theories
Working memory model
EVALUATION-Usefulness
practical implications- revision, amnesia patients
inspired further research
EVALUATION-Testability
MRI scans
- doesn’t have a lot of real life application can only test in labs- lacks mundane realism
