multi-store model of memory Flashcards
who created the msm
Atkinson & Shiffrin
what are the 3 stores of the msm
sensory register
short term memory
long term memory
what is coding
its the different formats of info the brain uses to store memory
what is capacity
how much info can be held by a store
what is duration
how long info can be held in that store before loss
what does modality specific mean
it means that the store depends on the sense organ
what are the different sense organ for stores
iconic: vision
echoic: sound
haptic: touch
gustatory: taste
olfactory: smell
what is maintenance rehearsal
repeating the info in order for it to go from stm to ltm (practice)
what is elaborative rehearsal
linking to info already in ltm
what is the capacity for sr
extremely large
what is the coding for sr
modality specific
what is the duration for sr
fraction of a second
what is the capacity for stm
7+/-2 items
what is the coding for stm
acoustic
what is the duration for stm
18-30 secs
what is the capacity for ltm
potentially unlimited
what is the coding for ltm
semantically
what is the duration for ltm
very long 46 years
what did Glanzer & Cunitz do
they provided research evidence that stm and ltm stores are separate processes
what did the Glanzer & Cunitz research consist of
- participants were asked to recall word lists
- recall was much stronger for words at the start and at the end of the list
- the first words entering ltm and being recalled = primacy effect
- the last words being held in stm and being recalled = recency effect
what did Spearling do
provided evidence for the sensory register
what did the spearling research consist of
- participants saw a grid of letters and digits
- they had to recall one row
- it was found that the recall for a row was 75% accurate
- this suggested that all rows were contained within the capacity of the iconic store, so sr is big
