classical conditioning Flashcards
what is classical conditioning
a type of learning in which pairs an automatic response with a stimulus to create a behaviour
what is the unconditioned stimulus (US)
US is something that produces a natural response e.g. dogs salivating at a piece pf meat
what is the unconditioned response (UR)
the reaction/response to the US
what is the neutral stimulus (NS)
something that doesn’t produce a response e.g. the dogs didn’t respond to the bell before condidtioning
what is the conditioned stimulus (CS)
a stimulus that will eventually trigger a conditioned response. the NS becomes the CS e.g. the bell
what is a conditioned response (CR)
the response to the CS e.g. the digs response to the bell ringing
what would happen as a result of classical conditioning over time?
eventually the dog will salivate just to the noise of the bell as they associate it with receiving meat
what is the experiment for classical conditioning
Pavlovs dogs
what is extinction
where a conditioned response dies out
what is spontaneous recovery
a conditioned response that has disappeared, suddenly reappears again
what is generalisation
the conditioned response is produced when a similar stimulus to the original conditioned stimulus is presented
what is discrimination
the conditioned response is only produced when a specific stimulus is presented
