Multi-store model Flashcards
What are the three main parts to the multi store model
- sensory register
- short term memory
- long term memory
Who came up with the msm
Atkinson and shriffin
what is the msm
three memory stores linked by processed that allow transfer of info from one store to the next
what is the first part of the msm
environmental stimuli
-things all around that we see, hear, smell, taste and feel
what is the sensory register
- where info is held at each of the senses
- capacity is large
- receive constant info but pays no attention and only stays here for milliseconds
what is attention
when a person is focused on one of the sensory stores data is transferred to the STM
what is maintenance rehearsal
when we repeat info over and over to keep it in STM
what is retrieval/remembering
if we need to recall info we take it out of our STM for use
what is retrieval
when we want to recall info back from LTM
what is LTM
no memories recalled directly from here
what is rehearsal
if we rehearse in for enough it will transfer from our STM to LTM and stores until we need to remember it
What was case of HM
- had hippocampus removed to try to remove seizures
- lost ability to create new STM
- could recall memories from past
What did case of HM find
memory is stored in different ways and places-LTM and STM are separate
what research supports MSM
baddeley found we tend to
- mix up words that sound similar when using STM
- mix up words that have similar meanings when using our LTM
evaluation of MSM
- many research provide support for MSM are done with digits, letters and syllables that have no meaning
- reducing external validity
- too simplistic
