Multi-store model Flashcards

Q

Multi store model

Defenition

A

An explanation of memory that is based on three different stores and the information is transered between these.
Three terms- short term memory, long term memory and the sensory store.

Q

Sensory store

Defenition

A

Where the initial coding first takes place, it is held for a very short time (half a second) and the method pf coding will depends on the organ that is involved (visual= eyes acoustic =ears)

Q

Multi store model

origins

A

Atkinson and Shiffin (1968) gave the multi store model its name as it consists of three memory stores linked by processes that transfer information from one to the next.

Q

Sensory store

Duration coding capacity

A

The capacity is very large if you pay attention.
if not attention is paid then it will only stay for a few milliseconds showing a limited druation
Attention is the process that takes it to the STM

Q

Short term memory

Duration capacity coding

A

Limited duration 18/30 seconds and will quickly decay if its not reherased.
It has limited capacity as information will be dispalced if new information enters.
It is coded acoustically
Maintenance reherasal (repeating) the information so it will be sent to the LTM.

Q

Long Term Memory

Duration capacity coding

A

The capacity and duration are both potentially unlimited and it is coded semantically.
The process is called retrival this is where you will get the information back from the LTM to the STM and making it ready for use

Q

Mulit store model

Evaluation- Positive

A

The brain images can confirnm that there are differences in the stores.
Beardsley (1977) found that the frontal cprtext was needed for activites using STM and not LTM
Scovile and Milner (1957) case of HM

Q

Multi store model

Evaluation- negative

A

There are different types of STM and LTM so this dosnt expalin the formation of Epesodic memories
Carik and lockhart (1972)- deeper processing is needed than juts maintenance rehersal as you need to complete both shallow and deep processing.
