Improving accuracy- Cognitive interview Flashcards
Cognative interveiw
Define
Interveiw technique that encourges the eye witness to recreate the original context of the crime in a attempt to increase accesiblity of stored information.
Techniques used to enchance memory
Description of the cognative interview
Geiselman (1984)
Based of psychological principles concerning effective memory recall.
4 main ways
Mental reinstatment
Recreate the whole event from every sense and making sure youre there again to try and make the memories able to return due to the cues.
Report everything
Make sure they include every detail to recall everything as new things will make you rember it.
Change order
Take an alternative pathway through the timeline to see if this allows you to rember anything else
Change perspective
Look at it from other point of veiws, so from other people who might have witnessed it.
This will break the Fixed Schema and make you rember other aspects
Evaluation
Reaserch into the effectivness
Meta analysis of 53 studies found that it was 34% more accurate than when using normal interveiw techniques- Kohnken (1999)
Will depend on the wofing that the interveiwer uses- Milne and Bull (2002)
Evaluation
Quantitu versus quality
Kohnken (1999)- found that 81% increase in correct data compared to a standard interview.
But 61% increase in incorrect data.
All data collected with CI needs to be treated with caution
Evaluation
Older people
Older people may be cautious when using this technique as to not give too much detai so remind them that they need to use every detail.
advantage was a mean age of 72 compared to younger participants with a mean age of 22
Mello and Fisher (1996)
Evaluation
Time constraints
Takes more time than a regular interveiw, requires special training lots of police officers dont have this time or the force dosnt have the moeny to put this into play.
