Multi-Store Memory Model (MSM) Flashcards
Who created the Multi-Store Memory model
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
What’s the first part of the MSM, and how is it transferred into the next store
Sensory Information, through paying attention.
After Sensory information is attained, whats the next store in the MSM
The sensory register (SR)
what type of rehearsal transfers memories from the Sensory Register to the next memory store
Maintenance rehearsal
What is the third store in the MSM
Short term Memory
What’s the final store in the MSM and how is it transferred from the Short Term Memory (STM)
Long term memory, it’s transferred from the STM through consolidation and prolonged rehearsal
How is the Sensory Register coded
It’s modality specific, iconic (visual) and echoic (acoustic)
What’s the Capacity of the sensory register
It’s high due to the volume of information we are presented with at any time.
whats the duration of the sensory register
5 seconds
What did Carib and Watson say about rehearsal (weakness of the MSM)
They said rehearsal is not always enough for the LTM, and they want to introduce elaborate rehearsal (linking it to existing memories) as its more useful to the LTM
Shallice and Wellington, what did they criticise about the MSM (weakness)
They had a client called (KF) who had amnesia. They say that the MSM doesn’t go into enough detail on the STM and they proposed that the STM has different visual and auditory stores.
What study did murdock (1962) do to help increase the validity of the MSM
He investigated serial position effect. This helped show that memories are stored in different placers. The results produced primacy and recency effects. This supports the validity of the MSM
