Multi-store memory model Flashcards
1
Q
ads of multi-store model
A
- HM’s epilepsy
- KF
- free recall experiment
2
Q
disads of multi-store model
A
- over-simplified
- multi-tasking
3
Q
HM’s epilepsy - ads of multi-store model
A
- psych attempted to treat a patient, HM’s epilepsy
- by removing several brain areas, including hippocampus
- resulted in patient being unable to code new LTM, although STM was unaffected
= supports the idea of separate + distinct, STM + LTM
4
Q
KF - ads of multi-store model
A
- reported case study of KF who had reduced STM capacity of 7±2 digits (motorbike accident)
- but LTM was normal
= supports the idea of separate STM + LTM stores - HOWEVER KF had poor STM for verbal tasks but not visual tasks
= suggests there is more than one type of STM
= contradicts MSM - also according to MSM, LTM are retrieved by STM
- BUT if STM is damaged = should be difficult to retrieve LTM
- HOWEVER KF was able to access LTM without difficulty
5
Q
free recall experiment - ads of multi-store model
A
- psych presented parts w/ a long list of words to be recalled in any order = free recall experiment
- serial position effet = words at the beginning + end of lists were recalled better than those in the middle
- primacy effect = words at beginning of list recalled cus they’ve been constantly rehearsed + transferred to LTM
- recency effect = words at end of list recalled cus they are still in STM
= supports the idea of separate + distinct STM + LTM
6
Q
over-simplified - disads of multi-store model
A
- MSM is oversimplified in assuming that there is only one type of STM + only one type of LTM
- research studies indicate that there are several types of STM (WMM)
- research also indicates that there are several types of LTM (WMM)
7
Q
multi-tasking - disads of multi-store model
A
- claimed that the MSM could not explain the ability
to multi-task
= if there is only one type of STM then multi-tasking would not be possible - However, people multi-task all the time,
- e.g. listening to the radio while driving.
