MT: Prosthetic Knee Designs Flashcards
1
Q
Knee Functions to Replace
Stability
A
- prevent knee collapse during stance phase
- safety first
2
Q
Knee Functions to Replace
Mobility
A
- allow movement during swing phase
- efficiency second
3
Q
Stability in Stance
A
- ensure extension at heel strike
- maintain extension (prevent buckling any time px is loaded)
4
Q
Mobility in Swing
A
- initiate flexion
- control rate, magnitude of fl/ex
- ensure full extension
5
Q
Swing Control Option - Resistance
A
- flexion seing resistance in early swing (limits heel rise)
- extension swing resistance in mid and late swing: affects toe clearance and terminal impact
6
Q
Resistance Cautions
A
- timing of flexion/extension affects toe clearance
- swing resistance does not prevent knee collapse when prosthesis is laoded
7
Q
What does insifficient resistance cause
A
- excessive heel rise: prolongs swing phase on the px side
- terminal impact: abrupt often audible, stop extension just prior to IC
8
Q
What does excessive resistance cause
A
- instability at IC due to flexed knee
9
Q
Swing Control Option - Assist
A
- increases knee extension force during swing
- late swing: aids full knee extension at IC
- early swing: resists knee flexion
- mid swing: may limit toe clearance
10
Q
Stance Phase Control
A
- resists knee flexion during stance
- provides stability during loading of prosthesis; especiallu important during loading
