MSM Evaluation Flashcards
What are the three strengths of the multi store model?
The serial position effect, Korsakoffs syndrome and KF
Who created the serial position effect?
Murdock
What is the primacy effect?
The words at the beginning of the list were recalled highly as they had been rehearsed and transferred into the LTM
What is the recency effect?
The words at the end of the list are recalled highly as they had just been seen so they were not lost out of the short term memory
Why are the words in the middle of the list poorly recalled?
They have been displaced by other words
How does the serial position effect support the multi store model?
It shows that LTM and STM are separate stores
What is Korsakoffs syndrome?
When the STM is intact but the transfer of information into the LTM is impaired
How does Korsakoffs syndrome support the multi store model?
The LTM and STM are separate stores otherwise both would be damaged
What happened to KF?
He was involved in a motorbike accident and his STM was severely damaged (he could only remember 2 digits on the digit span) but his LTM remained intact
How does KF support the multi store model?
There are separate otherwise both the STM and the LTM would have been damaged
What are the four limitations of the multi store model?
Its too simple, Craik says there are different types of rehearsal, Bekerian and Baddeleys jingles and people dont spend time rehearsing in real life
Why is the multi store model too simple?
It assumes that there is only single STM and LTM however research says that there are several types of STM
How does KF critises the multi store model?
It says that the multi store model is too simple as KF’s verbal STM was damaged but his visual STM was still intact
How does Craik critise the multi store model?
He said that there are different kinds of rehearsal. It is not the amount of rehearsal you do it is the kind of rehearsal that you do
What are the two types of rehearsal?
Elaborative and maintenance rehearsal
