MSKS Clinical Lecture 11_Pediatric MSKS Disorders part 2 Flashcards
What is Radial Head Subluxation? What causes it?
“Nursemaid’s Elbow” Caused by sudden pull of pronated arm which causes the pronated radial head to slip partially under annular ligament into the radiocapitellar joint
When do foot arches begin to develop?
After age 3. everyone is “flat footed” until that point
What is Metatarsus adductus?
What is Transient Monoarticular Synovitis?
• Common cause of limping in
children
• It is a diagnosis of exclusion
because septic arthritis and
osteomyelitis of the hip must
be excluded
• Etiology is uncertain but
possible causes are viral and
hypersensitivity. 70% of cases appear to corealate with an upper resp infection.
What is Erb’s-Duchenne Paralysis
- Damage to Fifth and sixth cervical nerves (upper trunk of BP)
- Cannot abduct the the arm at the shoulder.
- Inability to externally rotate the arm
- Unable to supinate the arm
- Absent Moro reflex on the injured side
What is KLUMPKE’S PARALYSIS
• Injury to the seventh, eighth
cervical nerves and the first
thoracic nerve
• Horner’s Syndrome
• Supinated arm, elbow bent
and wrist extended
What is Osgood-Schlatter disease
Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common cause of knee pain in growing adolescents. It is an inflammation of the area just below the knee where the tendon from the kneecap (patellar tendon) attaches to the shinbone (tibia). There are tinny microfractures in this region which cause a bumpy protrution from the tibial tuberosity.
What is Sever Disease?
• Common cause of heel pain
in active young people
• Mean age for presentation in
girls is age 9 years, for boys
about 11-12 years
• 60% are bilateral
• Caused by the force of the calf
musculature through the
Achilles tendon at the
calcaneal apophysis, causing
a micro fracture
