MSK-Lower limb Flashcards
Describe the femoral nerve. ie motor + sensory function
Originates from lumbar plexus (L2-L4)
Motor branches innervate pectineus, sartorius, illiacus + quads femoris.
Sensory branches are medial femoral cutaneous nerve and intermediate cutaneous nerve which innervate anterior + medial thigh. Medial aspect of lower leg and foot.
Damage to which nerve and muscle would lead to loss of knee extension
Femoral nerve
Describe the obturator nerve
Motor supply to medial compartment of thigh
What nerve supplies the lateral aspect of the foot?
Sural nerve
Which ligament is likely to be sprained in ankle inversion injuries?
Anterior talofibular ligament
What would L3-4 nerve root compression cause?
Sensory loss over anterior thigh
Weak quadriceps
Reduced knee reflex
Positive femoral stretch test
What would L5 nerve root compression cause?
Sensory loss dorsum of foot
Weakness in foot and big toe dorsiflexion
Reflexes intact
Positive sciatic nerve stretch test
What would S1 nerve root compression cause?
Sensory loss posterolateral aspect of leg and lateral aspect of foot
Weakness in plantar flexion of foot
Reduced ankle reflex
Positive sciatic nerve stretch test
If a patient develops a foot drop after a fibular neck fracture what nerve is likely damaged?
common peroneal
What would obturator nerve damage cause?
Weakness of leg adduction and pain in groin
What passes above the piriformis?
Superior gluteal vessels
