MS: tests and procedures Flashcards
antinuclear antibody test (ANA)
detects an antibody often present in serum of SLE or other autoimmune diseases
erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
measures time it takes for erythrocytes to settle to the bottom of a test tube; elevated ESR can indicate an inflammatory disorder
rheumatoid factor test (RF)
serum is tested for the presence of an antibody found in many patients with rheumatoid arthritis
serum calcium (Ca)
measurement of calcium level in serum; hyper and hypocalcemia
serum creatine kinase (CK)
measurement of the enzyme creatine kinase in serum; increased levels may indicate MS, polymyositis, or traumatic injury
uric acid test
measurement of uric acid in serum; high levels associated with gout
arthrocentesis
surgical puncture to remove synovial fluid from the joint space
anthrography
taking x-ray images after injection of contrast material in a joint
arthroplasty
surgical repair or replacement of a joint
hip arthroplasty; total hip replacement (THR)
replacement of the femoral head and acetabulum with prostheses that are fastened into the bone
total knee replacement (TKR)
replacement with a metal prosthesis to cover the femur end and metal and plastic covers for the tibial component
resection arthroplasty
removal of a small portion of a bone to repair the joint
interposition arthroplasty
placement of new tissue between the damaged surface of a joint
revision arthroplasty
replace a failing prosthetic joint
bone density test (bone densitometry or dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry [DEXA or DXA])
low-energy x-ray absorption in bones of the spinal column, pelvis, and wrist to measure bone mass
