Network file sharing protocol to read and write and request services from a computer program. Can be used on top of TCP protocol and application or user of application can access files from a remote server
Server Message Block (SMB)
A shared resource requires authentication and permission-based authorization
Access Process
Sharing can be across a domain. Dedicated storage should be allowed
File Sharing Method
The location of each of the shares that are created
Universal Naming Convention (UNC)
Uses SMB, default administrative share folders are Admin$ and C$

assigns a name to the new shared network path.

Users always granted the most restrictive permissions when the two methods (NSFS and sharing) are used together, as shown in the illustration above

provide a single hierarchical namespace, group servers shares into logical namespace
