when a individual has control over all the decisions in the business, there is little input from group members group members have to follow what the leaders say
3 advantages of autocratic leaders
1) can be effective in small groups where leadership is lacking
2) can be used where great deal of pressure is involved
3) manufacturing and construction work
2 disadvantages of autocratic leaders
1) discourage group input- they may not like the managers decisions that are made
2) lack of morale-since autocratic don’t allow input from members, followers seem to be dissatisfied

leaders allow members to participate, letting them have an input towards the final say

1) solves complex issues more quickly
2) creates and encourages a creative environment

1) low staff if loyal connection to management is not first established
2) dissatisfaction in employee if bad decisions are made

1) urgent tasks need different leadership from routine tasks such as unexpected large order coming in, may need an authoritarian leader to tell employees what to do and how to do it
2) depending on the skills of the worker: unskilled workforce = authoritarian leader or small, educated workforce = democratic leaders
external factors that may influence management and leadership style
1) depending on how well the economy is going - during a recession business needs strong leadership style to guide it through difficult economic times = authoritarian or paternalistic approach leaders can be efficient in times of crisis - can clear quick commands don’t need to consult others or if economy is doing well democratic leaders are better don’t need a strong leadership approach they can take time to communicate with employees
2) increases competition requires democratic leaders - motivate workers to adapt to the change or expansion
