Movie notes - Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria Flashcards
How many people were infected with a superbug bacteria that is antibiotic resistant?
two million people
what the first case of this superbug?
An 11 year old gets infected with a bacteria that is resistant to the strongest antibiotic
She complained about her hip hurting and nothing was work, no medicine
Then they went to the hospital and said she had a virus infection, and the pain spread and the fever got worse
They then put her on antibiotics and her blood pressure was dropping
They diagnosed her with pneumonia and she had a MRSA, a staph bacteria that was causing sepsis
This bacteria is resistant to many antibiotics
She likely picked at her scabs
It also damaged her lungs and they had to put her ECMO, a lung bypass
The tubes brought a new danger as they can harbor bacteria
Stenotrophomonas is a different bacteria from staph, it can live inside breathing tubes and can be hard to treat
Only 3-4 antibiotics that are able to treat the bacteria
Gram negative bacteria
It is hard to treat because it has armor around it and makes normal bacteria difficult to get into
Pan resistant, it is resistant to everything
Only one hope to save her life is to get them surgically removed
What happened in India?
Ricci was moved to a different hospital and his condition got worse
The doctors were telling them that he had to get surgery everyday in order to clean up the infection
What ricci had was a super bug in india, an enzyme that carries NDM-1 is a gene that can turn bacteria resistant to antibiotics
And genes can jump from bacteria to bacteria
And it wasnt found just in the hospital it was found in the environment
He had five bugs and they are all resistant to antibiotics and none of the powerful antibiotics didnt work
All he had left was collison but they dont like using it because of it’s toxins
What was KPC
a gene that can cause bacteria to become antibiotic resistant
A major KPC outbreak which began in summer 2011 where a women was transferred to NIH from new york
The patient had recovered and was released
5 weeks later tho unexpectedly the KPC bacteria came up in a respotarty culture and then many more patients and they had an outbreak, and the patients were getting sick and the antibiotics were not working
They even made a different ICU for KPC patients, but the bacteria was still spreading
They compared the DNA sample of each patient to see how the bacteria was spread
Some of the patients were silent carrier, the bacteria is able to live in the stomach of patients without causing infection
18 patients had been affected with KPC and 6 people had died from it
when did antibiotics become a staple
Antibiotics are a staple of modern medicine after world war II
Yet the miracles of these drugs is slipping away
Antibiotics are the only drugs that the more you use it the less effective they are, the more you expose the bacteria to an antibiotic the more opportunity for the bacteria to become resistant
What is the problem with bacterial resistance
The problem is the highly resistant gram negative bacteria
