movement terminology Flashcards
Define the transverse (horizontal plane)?
passes through the body following the horizon. divides into a top and bottom
define sagittal plane?
passes through the body making a left and right side
define frontal (coronal) plane?
passes through the body making a front and back half
Explain non-primary plane movement?
A movement that occurs at some angle to one of the primary planes - a diagonal plane
- in anatomy, we called this the oblique plane
Define Axis?
point at which a body segment or the entire body can rotate
Define mediolateral (ML) axis (transverse axis)
passes through the body from side to side (ie. left to right)
includes flexion and extension
Define anteroposterior (AP) axis (sagittal axis)
passes through the body from front to back
includes actions like abductions and adduction
Define longitudinal Axis
passes through the body from top to bottom. actions include rotation, and or whole body movements involving twists
Define a uniaxial joint
movement in 1 plane. For example, flexion and extension in the elbow
Define a biaxial joint
movement in 2 places - eg, knee - flexion, extension, slight rotation (when the knee is flexed)
Define a triaxial joint
movement in all 3 planes - eg. shoulder, neck, trunk, hip - flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, or lateral flexion and rotation
