center of gravity, stability and mobility Flashcards
What is the center of gravity?
total effect of the force of gravity on a whole body or system. the center of the gravity is the balance point of a system
What is the base of support?
area of the ground or other object enclosed by the points of contact of the athlete’s body
what is the line of gravity?
plumb line falling downward from the center of gravity
define stability?
resistance to disruption of equilibrium
define balance?
ability to control equilibrium, adjust the body to keep the line of gravity within the base of support
What is linear stability?
Resistance to being moved or having your direction of movement changed. Linear stability is related to mass and inertia
What is rotary stability?
resistance to being tipped or spun in a circle
How do we achieve stability?
- we can lower our center of gravity
- make it so our center of gravity is within the base of support
- wider base of support
- increased friction
- increased body mass
How to achieve mobility?
- raise Center of gravity
- narrow the base of support
- Center of gravity moving to edge of or outside the base of support
- decreased body mass
What should athletes do in contact sports?
athlete’s should widen their base of support in the same direction as the collision
