What are Akathitic Movments?
“unable to sit still”
feeling of inner, general restlessness that is relieved by moving about
-most common cause = iatrogenic
What is Athetosis?
Describes a class of slow, writhing, continuous and involuntary movements. Can affect any set of musculature, but usually the distal limbs
What is Chorea?
involuntary, irregular, purposeless, nonrthymic, abrupt, rapid, unsustained movements that seem to flow from one body part to another
Unpredictable
ex: Huntingtons
twisting movements that tend to be sustained
Dystonia
ex: cervical dystonia
Sudden, shock-like involuntary movements caused by muscular contractions or inhibitions
Myoclonus
Consist of abnormal movements and abnormal sounds
Vary in severity
Usually preceded by uncomfortable feeling or sensory urge that is relieved by carrying out the movement
Tic
What are 4 criteria of Restless legs syndrome?
URGE mnemonic
U: Urge to move legs
R: Rest induces symptoms
G: Getting active brings relief
E: Evening and night make symptoms worse
What is the Tx of restless leg syndrome?
Carbidopa/L-DOPA
ropinarole
Gabapentin, pregabalin
What is a blood disorder that can cause restless leg syndrome?
Anemia - Iron + Folate deficiency
What are Extrapyramidal symptoms?
- Dystonia
- Parkinsonism
- Tardive Dyskinesia
- Akathesia
What are four components of Parkinson’s?
- Resting tremor
- Bradykinesia
- rigidity
- Gait/Postural Instability
focal dystonia around the eyes which can result in rapid blinking or even sustained or forceful eye lid closure
Blepharospasm
slowed thinking
Bradyphrenia
fine persistent quivering or rippling of muscles
Myokimia
occurrence of involuntary movements in one part of the face when there is voluntary movement is another part of the face
