Movement Acroos Membranes Flashcards
Describe active transport
Cells move molecules against concentration gradient
(Low - high)
Uses a protein pump, requires ATP
Describe passive transport
Simple diffusion - diffusion of non polar, hydrophobic molecules
Facilitated diffusion - diffusion of polar, hydrophilic molecules through a protein channel
Difference between anti port and symport
Antiport - draw molecules in against concentration gradient
Symport - sodium generates enough energy that amino acid is pulled along with it… Draws molecules with concentration gradient of another molecule
What molecules can get through a phospholipid bilayer directly?
Fats and other lipids
Polar molecules (water), ions (salts, ammonia), and large molecules (starch, proteins) cannot get though directly
