Mouse Party Flashcards
What neurotransmitter is affected by alcohol? Does it increase or decrease ?
Glutamate and GABA
Decreases glutamate and increases GABA
Meth
Affects dopamine (increases) meth enters dopamine vessels, forcing dope out. Excess dope works in reverse, pumping it out of the cell into synapse and becomes trapped
Overbinds to receptors over stimulating cell
Feel intense pleasure and exhilaration
Cocaine
Affects dopamine (increases)
Blocks transporters and dope is traps in synaps, over binds - over stimulating cell (causes transporters to work in reverse)
Fidgety can’t stay still
LSD
Affects serotonin (increases then decreases
Excites receptors, exits locus coeruleous
Feeling awake, easily startled
Marijuana
Dopamine (increases)
Cannabinoid receptors turn off release of inhibitory neurotransmitters
THC mimics anandamide and binds to cann receptors
Heroin
Dopamine (increases)
Neurotransmitter release is shut down
Heroin binds to opiate receptors, dopamine floods synapse- produces immediate feeling of good
Ecstasy
Serotonin (increases)
Mimics serotonin, more rapid take up, transported becomes confused and does job in reverse (transports serotonin out of cell) overstimulates cell
Moody, sleepy, hungry
