Motor System Flashcards
What is Cardiac Muscle?
Muscle of the heart Involuntary Makes heart beat Controlled by nerves of automatic nervous system Is striated
What is smooth muscle?
Involuntary
Found in the lining of many organs
Unstriated
What is skeletal muscle?
Voluntary
Makes the bones of the skeleton move
Are attracted to tendons
How are triceps and biceps related?
When biceps contract, triceps relax, bones forming elbow joint are brought closer together
When biceps relax, triceps contract, two bones move apart
What is a flexor?
Muscle that contracts to bend a joint (bicep)
What is an extensor?
Muscle that contracts to straighten a joint (tricep)
What is the Central Nervous System (CNS)?
Ensures that biceps and triceps do that attempt to pull against each other
What are the two types of myofiaments?
Actin - thin filaments
Myosin - thick filaments
What is the process of the Sliding Filament Theory?
Myosin head hydrolyzes ATP to ADP and P
Myosin head binds to actin forming a cross-bridge
Releasing ADP and P, myosin relaxes to its low state, sliding the thin myofilaments
Binding of new ATP releases myosin heads
What is type I myosin?
Cause slower muscle twitch
Good for distance runners
Break down ATP slowly but efficient
Rely predominantly on aerobic respiration
What is type IIa and type IIx myosin?
Fast twitch muscle fibres
Break down ATP faster but less efficiently
Rely predominantly in anaerobic respiration
