Digestive System Flashcards
What are accessory organs?
Makes the chemicals needed for digestion and sends them into the alimentary canal
Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
What is the Alimentary canal?
A continuous, coiled, and hollow muscular tube that food passes through
What does salivary amylase do?
Breaks down starch (polysac) into maltose
Only starch digestion takes place in the mouth
What is a bolus?
Mixture of food and saliva
What are the four enzymes in the stomach?
Mucus
Hydrochloric Acid
Rennin
Pepsin
What is the function of mucus?
Protects the walls of the stomach
What is the function of Hydrochloric Acid in the stomach?
Kills bacteria and helps with the physical breakdown of food
What is the function of rennin in the stomach?
Starts to break down milk proteins
What is the function of pepsin in the stomach?
Breaks down proteins and is activated in low pH
What is the material leaving the stomach called?
Chyme
What is peptidase?
Breaks down polypeptides into amino acids (completes protein digestion)
What three secretions is chyme mixed with in the duodenum?
Pancreatic secretions
Bile from the gallbladder
Intestinal secretions
What remains of the food at the end of the ileum?
Some water, indigestible food matter, and bacteria
What is pancreatic amylase?
Completes digestion of starch into maltose
What is Trypsinogen?
Converting into trypsin (active form) in the small intestine by the enzyme enterokinase
