Principles of MI - 4
Express empathy - that must have been hard on you
Support self-efficacy - focus on previous success, skills & strengths; pat on the back
Roll with resistance - do not challenge resistance, de-escalate and avoid negative interaction
Develop discrepancy - where they are versus where they want to be
Objective: MI Skills and Strategies (interaction techniques) - 3/11
OARS - Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries
Prep change talk - DARN - Desire, Ability, Reason, Need

Strategies to evoke change talk - 10
Ask evocative question
Explore decisional balance, ask for pros and cons of changing
Good things/Not - ask for positives and negatives of target behavior
Ask for elaboration/Examples - in what ways? Tell me more?
Look back - Ask about before target behavior emerged. Better?
Look forward - What happens with status quo? What if target behavior implemented? Where would you like to be 5 years?
Query extremes - Worst if don’t change? Best if you do change?
Use change rulers - 1-10 how important to change? Why at 3 not 1?
Explore goals and values - how does that fit with target behavior?
Come alongside - Perhaps X is so important to you that you cannot give it up no matter the cost.
MI Tips - 3
Reflective listening - statements not questions
- I can see is is really important to you to be a grandpa. Then SHUTUP.
Change talk - I need, I want - reflect this
Summarize - start with negatives, end with positives
Objective: Define MI
