Stages of change

A

Pre-contemplation- no intention on changing behavior
Contemplation- aware a problem exists but no commitment to action
Preparation- intent on taking action to address problem
Action- active modification of behavior
Maintenance- sustained change; new behavior replaces old
Relapse- fall back into old patterns of behavior

What to do in each stage

A

Pre-contemplation:explore meaning of events that brought the person to treatment, results of previous efforts, pros and cons of target behaviors
Contemplation: explore self-efficacy, expectations around change, summarize self-motivational statements
Determination: identify and lower barriers, help enlist social support, offer menu of options for change
Action- help ID high-risk scenarios and develop coping strategies; support realistic view and small steps
Maintenance: help develop escape plan, work to set new ST and LT goals
Recurrence: frame recurrence as learning opportunity, develop alternative coping strategies, encourage to stay in the process
