What is Taylor’s scientific management theory?
- He believed in a fair days pay for a fair days work.
- Believed employees would do the minimum amount of work if not supervised.
- Main form of motivation is higher wages.
- A managers job is to tell workers what to do.
- Believed in division of labour where workers would repeat the same tasks. He doesn’t take into account that repetitive jobs are demotivating.
What is Mayo’s human relations theory?
- Found that worker motivation increased when they were being studied.
- Working in teams was more important than money.
- Non financial motivators were the most important.
- Repetitive work was demotivating.
- Recognition and appreciation improves job satisfaction.
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
Pyramid of needs:
Physiological needs- food, water, shelter.
Safety needs- secure jobs to meet these needs.
Love/belonging needs- teamwork.
Esteem needs- responsibility and promotion.
Self actualisation- When all needs are met you have reached your potential.
What is Herzberg’s 2 factor theory?
Hygiene factors: Salaries, wages, employee benefits, job security, working conditions, work/life balance.
As a result, employees will have general satisfaction.
Motivating factors: Status, recognition, responsibility, challenging work, promotion, growth.
As a result, employees will have high motivation and satisfaction and have strong commitment.
What are examples of financial incentives?
- Piecework.
- Commission.
- Bonus.
- Profit-sharing.
- Performance related pay.
What are examples of non-financial incentives?
- Delegation (transferring responsibility).
- Consultation (discuss issues).
- Empowerment.
- Team working.
- Job enrichment (variety in jobs).
