What are the three elements of emotion?
physiological, behavioral, cognitive
Name some of Ekman’s universal emotions.
happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, disgust, contempt, fear
What are the three main theories of emotion?
James-Langer, Cannon-Bard, and Schatcher-Singer
Describe the James-Langer theory of emotion.
States that a physiological response occurs first and is later cognitively labeled
Describe the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion.
States that physiological responses and cognitive labeling occur simulataneously.
Describe the Schatcher-Singer theory of emotion.
States that a physiological response will not cause an emotion if the circumstances do not allow for cognitive learning. They must work in tandem.
What is the main system involved in emotion?
the limbic system
What are the parts of the limbic system?
amygdala, septal nuclei, and hippocampus
What type of memory does the amygdala deal with?
implicit memory (emotional memory)
What type of memory does the hippocampus deal with?
explicit memory
