What is achievement motivation?
Desire to accomplish goals, master skills, meeting standards, and having control of resources
What is the drive reduction theory?
aroused/tense state related to a physical need such as hunger or thirst
What is optimum arousal?
behavior driven by a need to either increase or decrease our psychological arousal level
What is the Yerkes-Dodson law?
Says arousal levels can help performance but too much arousal can interfere with performance (optimum arousal)
What is eustress?
good stress (something that helps you, but “stresses” you)
Who created the hierarchy of needs and what is it?
Andrew Maslow in 1970
once the lower level (basic needs) are satisfied, we are then promoted to satisfy the higher level’s needs (self growth)
What is the James-Lange theory of emotion?
Emotion is conscious awareness of our physiological responses to stimuli- body happens first (physical) then thoughts (emotion)
What is the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion?
The conscious/cognitive experience and the emotion happen simutaneously
What does the Schacter-Singer “Two-Factor” theory say about emotion?
Emotions do not exist until we label what we are feeling
What is the spill-over effect?
picking up on what others are feeling around you, causing you to begin to feel the same thing
Robert Zajonc, Joseph LeDoux, Richard Lazarus’s Theory of emotion says what?
some emotional reactions like fears, likes, and dislikes happen on the “low road” in the brain, skipping conscious thought
What is motivation?
Need or desire that energizes behavior and directs it toward a goal
What are the two parts of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What does the autonomic nervous system do in times of high emotional states?
Arousal; heartbeat/racing heart, rapid breaths, perspiration, etc.
