What is equity theory?
People assess the equitability of their treatment by social comparisons and use this to motivate themselves
Inequity is undesirable and raises anxiety
People are more affected by the idea that i am getting too little rather than i am getting too much
Implications of equity theory
Avoid underpayment/overpayment
If outcomes are not fair ensure the process is fair
Demonstrating a care for the employees needs beyond their equity concerns makes a big difference
What are hygiene factors?
Factors that motivate and factors that cause dissatisfaction
Motivators: contribute to satisfaction
Nature of work
Sense of achievement
Recognition and responsibility in the work place
Personal growth and advancement

What is the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivators?
Intrinsic: motivate you to do something for your own sake, more sustainable
Extrinsic: motivate you to do something for a reward, only sustainable until reward exists
What are the issues with extrinsic motivators
Reinforcement theory: behaviour only when rewarded
Satiation effects: more we get less it matters
Dependence breeds reactance, not satisfied with extrinsic rewards
What is the carrot and stick technique?
Carrot- reward
Stick- punishment
Only works as long as mechanisms are in place
Changes in behaviour when there is loss in freedom
Reward removes intrinsic motivators
What is the self determination theory?
Internalisation of motivation
Controlled motivation: extrinsic regulation, introjected regulation
Autonomous motivation: identified regulation, integrated motivation
How do you internalise motivation?
Relatedness
Competence
Autonomy
How do you motivate employees?
Provide meaningful rationale for tasks
Acknowledge perspective of an employee
Conceiving choice rather than control
What is the adaptation theory?
Our biases about what will make us happy
People overestimate effect of success
We underestimate how fast we adapt to the situation
What is goal setting theory?
Goals that are specific challenging accepted by employees accompanied with feedback
However it creates competition and people stop once the goal is achieved
It may increase unethical behaviour
