A

A need or desire that directs and energizes behavior.
2 part:
Desire to achieve a goal.
Commit to action to accomplish it.

Adherence v Non-compliance.

A

The degree to which clients follow a treatment regimen.

Adherence–less externally driven, less judgemental.
Non-compliance–effected by motivation. has negative conotation.

A

Intrinsic–no external reward. Internal.
Extrinsic–external reward or incentive. Outside.

Explain Locus of Control.

A

One’s fate is either internally or externally controlled. When internal, there is better adherence and more success. Internal and external are dynamic and change.

A

A client’s perception of reality. or an individual’s belief in his or her CAPACITY TO EXECUTE behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments.

Seligman created an experiment with dogs. What was it?

A

Learned helplessness. Dogs were shocked. Those that could control when the shock ended, escaped from it when given the chance. Those that could not control when the shock ended gave up, and when given the chance, did not try to escape the shock.

How does one improve self-esteem?

A

One’s feelings of high or low self-worth.
A person with strong self esteem will feel more in control and more motivated.
You can improve self-esteem with awareness/sensitivity: Increasing locus of control. Let patients do the things they can do.
