How can loss of a function be negatively perceived?
May cause one to lose identity. I can mean different things to different people.
Does loss affect more than just the loss of a function?
Yes, it can transform a person’s entire life.
What does integrating loss into one’s life do for the person?
It facilitates the grieving process and eventually reaches acceptance. Some react with strong feelings of fear or sadness…stress producing.
What is Grief?
The emotional reaction to loss.
What are the components of emotion? in a broad sense

Feeling (Affect)
Why was the 2 month exception for grief v depression removed from DSM 5?
It gave the false impression that grief should resolve in 2 months.
What are the 5 stages of grieving and dying?
Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance. Not everyone moves through all 5 stages and not always linearly either.
What are the 4 tasks of mourning?
Accept the reality of the loss.
Experience the pain associated with grief.
Adjust to the circumstances created by the loss.
Emotionally relocating the deceased and progressing on with life.
Why may a personal caregiver experience loss?
They lose their role as caregiver since they were enmeshed in the needs of others.
How is grief a double edge sword?
Possibilities for empowering people to grow and mature or to give up on life.
How does a healthcare professional deal with loss?
Providers share a piece of the client’s losses, especially as they amass. Often they will emotionally detach themselves to protect their emotions.
Too much grief can lead to burnout.
